Freight shipments between France and Europe to "expand", says Director
19/05/2010
John Shirley Limited has indicated that it will expand the company's presence on the continent.
Speaking shortly after a business trip to established customers in France, the Managing Director said that the "changing market required changing attitudes" for freight forwarders if they are to flourish in the future.
Whilst the British economy is limping out the recession, Mr Shirley believed that there were "many opportunities in France" to be had.
He added: "The Anglo-Saxon method of doing business seems to appeal to our clients... there's a great deal of interest in our services in an economy which seems to be thriving".
"Given our existing regular freight traffic between France and Italy, and now between France and the Balkans, there is potential for more partnerships between new French clients. I have been please to see that there are those seeking to move goods between countries where we have traditionally specialised."
John Shirley, who speaks both French and Serbo-Croat amongst other languages, has sought to adapt the company's strategy in the face of challenging economic conditions. With over a decade of experience in dealing with French customers, it was "only natural" that the company should seek to offer cross-trade services to French, British and other European customers.
For French shipments, John Shirley Ltd has specialised in full load freight services between France and North Eastern Italy for several years. This has evolved into greater quantities of part load services, and following demand from French customers, a move towards shipments between France and the Balkans.

Steam Locomotive shipped successfully from Bosnia to Kent
As the project to acquire 62-521 from Mittal Steel Zenica proceded to the stage where transport was arranged, John Shirley Transport of Dover was selected on the basis of price quotation, experience with moving unusual loads in and around the Balkans, and also because of expertise with the local language. Some while after John Shirley Transport Ltd was appointed to transport locomotive 62-521 from Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina to Alresford in Hampshire, Project 62 discovered that John Shirley himself had a family association with Mid-Hants Railway Trustee, Robin Higgs. A few weeks after 62-521 arrived in Hampshire, John, a fluent speaker of Serbo-Croat, visited Ropley to read a welcome address to 62-521 in her own language more...
